FairKey
In today’s modern world, theft is becoming larger and easier. With modern technology, you’d think cars with key fobs would be harder to steal. Well, that’s where you are wrong. With the push of a button, thieves have your car key data and can start and drive your car in minutes.

This is a diagram demonstrating how keys can be copied
Like the above diagram mentions, the key signal can be copied from the safety of your own home. Right where you’d leave your metal house keys. The only difference is that the house keys can’t be remotely copied.
This made me ask the question, How might we create a modern key tray that is not only stylish but is also user-friendly, and most importantly, protects your belongings from prowling thieves.
Inspiration
Market Research
When researching to see what was available on the market, I came across faraday boxes. They are a purpose-made box with a metal lining designed especially to block electromagnetic and electrostatic fields. This is important because this is how your car key communicates with your car. This is the form of signal that the key operates on.
Immediately, I wanted to find a way to implement some of the metal into an exquisite design. While still allowing usability, functionality, and safety for not only traditional keys but also key fobs.
After looking at the market, my mood board, and doing some initial thumbnail sketches. I determined that I wanted to go in the direction of a multi-layered design. Where the bottom is a chamber with metal insulation in the walls and base to house a car’s key fob. With a typical like tray on top to hold traditional metal keys. This top will also have insulation to guarantee no signals can make it in or out
Prototyping
Metal Insulation
First Revision: Add a hump in the middle to aid with usability when grabbing the fob.
First Revision: Adjustment of the upper edge, added a slight filet. A felt top was affixed to dampen noise and add aesthetic appeal.
*In the future, I would like to print on top of the felt to have a better edge
Second Revision: Next, I made the hump slightly skinnier and more flowing to add more space to the cavity and improve aesthetics/ usability.
